OIKOS : of certain affinity, tribe

I love my family. I adore my husband. I am smitten by my son. I enjoy crocheting. I am grateful for friends. These are my tribes.

A Gleeful Clutch for my Gleeful Friend

July of last year I had a few questions on getting Oikos Handmade up and running so I contacted Gleeful Peacock for some help.  I loved her items (had a few already) and her business was growing, Nikki was doing something right. So I asked her a few questions and she gladly responded. It seems as though I have known her longer and have looked at Nikki not only as a friend but a mentor. It has been nice finding a local handmade gal to give some input and encouragement. Nikki stated she really liked my Granny Square clutch and posted it to her Facebook Fan page. I took it as a huge compliment. I had commented on a new headband she had done and she mentioned a trade, I was all in.

Roseanne Clutch

I had an order for a granny square clutch come in. In the description of what the customer wanted it to look like she wrote,

Hello, I would like this clutch with black background/borders and multicolored squares (like the blanket on the couch in the show “Roseanne”). You can do a google image search for Roseanne couch and find examples lol. Thanks! Malorie

I have watched a few episodes of Roseanne on TVland but have never noticed the blanket on the couch. So I went to google to find a picture of the Roseanne blanket, and was pleasantly surprised. I was excited to get started using fun colors that I had. I started out with the two squares clutches like I have been doing but decided this

Crochet Slingback Flats

For Mother’s day I made my mom, sister, and mom-in-law some crochet slingback flats. I added a flip flop bottom so they can be worn outside if wanted, this also gives them more cushion. They are made using 100% cotton yarn. I made my mom the red/black, sister orchid/brown, and mom-in-law aqua/white. These make great gifts for new moms in the hospital. You can also get these in different sizes and sit them at your door so your guests won’t wear their shoes inside.  You could also put them in your purse for when you go to a friend or family members house. Great for vacations so you don’t have to walk barefooted on hotel floors…the list goes on and on. What colors would you chosoe to have your slingbacks done in?

If you crochet the pattern is from Mamachee on Etsy. I was lucky enough to test this pattern before she sold it. I have these up in the shop as well, Enjoy!

Music Monday

In honor of the Thunder playing in round two of playoffs against the Lakers here is a music video to kick off their first game. A local group of guys and a girl did a parody to Maroon 5′s, Moves Like Jagger. Enjoy listening to A Beard Like Harden’s.
Thunder Up!

Happy Mother’s Day

Isn’t she beautiful? I have been lucky enough to call the lady in the middle (Patty) my momma for the past 27 years. My sister (Tommie, on the right) and I have an amazing relationship with our mom. My mom knows when we need a mom or need our best friend. She gives until she can’t give anymore, loves with all she has, listens when we talk, talks when we need to listen, and gives the most amazing hugs and kisses. I can’t go a day without talking to her, even if it is just to say we love each other, I have to hear her voice. My mother’s love for her daughters and her two sons (by marriage) made me want to be a mom. For four years I hated this day…it was a day that reminded me of something I wanted, something I longed for. I wanted to celebrate being a mom to have somebody need to see me or hear my voice every day. I have been able to celebrate Mother’s day for the past three years (one pregnant, 2 with our little mister) and I have enjoyed being able to share this day with my mom. My sister was able to celebrate her first Mother’s day today. I love seeing this strong young woman, who acts more like our mom everyday, be a mom. Her little Max  adores her to pieces. I hope our boys will someday be able to say “Grammy thank you for teaching our Mom’s what it means to be a Mother”.  Happy Mother’s day to two of the most beautiful momma’s I know! Happy Mother’s day to all of you moms, moms-to-be, and those who are struggling to become parents. Enjoy your day!
